Martha Tilaar Spa
Since the 6th century, Indonesia has a rich history of blending Chinese, Indian, and Middle Eastern cultures to those of the local kingdoms scattered throughout the vast archipelago.
During the period of the 6th and 7th centuries, the southeast coast of Sumatra was the center of Indonesia’s most advanced early kingdom, which exploited trade routes along the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the Spice Islands. The trade route opened up markets such as China, India, Gujarat and Persia, as well as the neighboring Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines. In the 15th century, the route also opened up a way for westerners such as the Portuguese and the Dutch.
These trades not only flourished the interchanging of commodities among the various regions, but also inspired the interchanging of socio-cultural aspects of these countries that include Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christian to be added to the rich mixture of cultures in Indonesia.
The fusion of all these various influences together made a one-of-a-kind culture that is uniquely Indonesian, and was inherited right through to the traditional medicines, rituals, and healing systems. It is evident, for instance, in traditional medicines such as the Bali Usahada, which is distinctly Balinese but with a very strong Ayurvedic concept.
Out of the harvest of this rich cultural melting pot, Martha Tilaar Spa was born.
With the desire to offer only the best experience for her customers, Martha Tilaar found a unique concept for her spa, a holistic approach using centuries-old eastern traditions of health and beauty throughout the human lifecycle.
Inspired by the ancient wisdom and the Indonesian tradition of bathing and beauty care throughout the lifecycle, combined with the “new age” trend of back to nature, the “Beauty and Harmony Lifestyle Spa” was created.
Today, Martha Tilaar Spa has around 40 branches in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia, making it the largest spa chain in Indonesia.
